Introduction: Tropicam 0.5% is used before eye examinations and to treat an eye condition called uveitis. It acts by enlarging the pupil of the eyes and helps the doctor visualize the eye more closely. It reduces redness and swelling in the eyes after cataract surgery. Tropicam 0.5% is for external use only. Use it in the dose and duration as advised by the doctor. Refrain from touching the tip of the dropper to any surface to avoid contaminating the eye drops. How to use Tropicam 0.5%: This medicine is for external use only. Take it in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. Check the label for directions before use. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it. Gently squeeze the dropper and place the medicine inside the lower eyelid. Wipe off extra liquid.
How Tropicam 0.5% works: Tropicam 0.5% is used to dilate or enlarge the pupil of the eye so that the doctor can examine the back of the eyeball. It may also be used to reduce pain in certain eye conditions.
What if you forget to take Tropicam 0.5%?: If you miss a dose of Tropicam 0.5%, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
Indication: Uveitis, Production of mydriasis
Adult Dose: Ophthalmic Production of mydriasis Adult: Instill 1-2 drops of a 0.5% solution 15-20 minutes before examination.
Child Dose: Ophthalmic Production of mydriasis Child: Instill 1-2 drops of a 0.5% solution 15-20 minutes before examination.
Contraindication: Contraindicated in persons showing hypersensitivity to any component of this preparation.
Mode of Action: Tropicamide is a tertiary amine antimuscarinic which causes relaxation of the sphincter muscle of the iris resulting in pupillary dilatation. It also causes paralysis of the ciliary muscle leading to loss of accommodation.
Precaution: Elderly, children, pregnancy. Hypertension, hyperthyroidism, DM, cardiac disorders. To reduce systemic absorption, press on the lacrimal sac for 1-2 minutes following instillation. Do not drive or engage in hazardous activities and protect eyes from bright illumination when pupils are dilated. May fail to produce adequate cycloplegia in children.
Side Effect: Transient stinging, blurred vision, photophobia and superficial punctate keratitis have been reported with the use of tropicamide. Increased intraocular pressure has been reported following the use of mydriatics. Dryness of the mouth, tachycardia, headache, allergic reactions, nausea, vomiting, pallor, central nervous system disturbances and muscle rigidity have been reported with the use of tropicamide.
Interaction: May antagonise effects of ophthalmic carbachol, pilocarpine, or cholinesterase inhibitors.
